Today, we had an open day for Golden
Grove Scout Group. Essentially, it was the group’s 40th Birthday
party and we invited a lot of people to come and celebrate the day with us.
It had been several months in the
planning, and a bit of work went into the day, who was going to have a spot to
talk, which VIPs were going to be invited etc.
There was even a Cub Section Peak
Award (Gray Wolf) presentation on the day, and a time capsule buried, to be
brought up in 20 years’ time (when the group turns 60).
Golden Grove Scout Group started back in 1983, and came about because a group
of parents in Surry Downs were looking at joining a group. They discovered that
both local groups of Tea Tree Gully and Ridgehaven Scout Groups were full and
had waiting lists. So, they decided to start a new one!
When it came to naming the group, they were in discussions as a parent
committee on what to call the group. As this was happening, the state
government announced that they were allowing Delfin to develop the area known
as Golden Grove. Hence, they decided that they would call the new Scout Group
Golden Grove, and hence the group was started. As a result, it just pre dates
the suburb.
Overall, today was a great day, and
it was well attended by both current and past members. We had the locals MPs,
Mayor and the Chief Commissioner of Scouts SA also in attendance.
