Forcast of South Australian heat

One thing I like to do with this blog, apart from report on my activities, is to provide some insight into Australian Way of life. Sometimes, this includes blog entries such as this, about our weather. Other times, it will (and has) included other non scouting activities that Akela attends and takes me with her.

Today, I am doing a short entry about the weather we are going to experience.

This week, it is going to be very hot in Adelaide, where I live. We are planning very few (if any) outdoor activities for the coming days, apart from what we need to do.  Just so people have some idea of the temps we will be experiencing, please see below (including the conversions for those who don’t use the same system as we do here in Australia)

Sunday 12^th January – 34C (93.2F)

Monday 13^th January – 40C (104F)

Tuesday 14^th  January– 41C (104F)

Wednesday 15^th January– 43C (105.8F)

Thursday 16^th January– 43 C (105.8F)

Friday 17^th January– 40C (93.2)

Saturday 18^th January– 26C  (78.8F)

It will be the first time in four years that we have experienced several days at once over 40C. We get them every summer, but very rare for them to happen for 5 days in a row or more.

In January 2010, we sweltered through four days of extreme temperatures, while in January 2009, we sweated through a continuous run of six days above 40C. In fact, it was during the period of the 2009 heat wave that Victoria suffered terribly from the Black Saturday Fires. This is due to the weather we experience in South Australia heading east.

We can only hope that we see few to no deaths or fires as a result of this week’s heat.

Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Sixers Big Bash (T20) Game

This evening, Akela took myself and Semus (the Playford Cub Pack Travelling Mascot) to the Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Sixes at Adelaide Oval. After the game, Semus and I had our photo taken with Smash, the Adelaide Strikers Mascot.  Below, is the link to info regarding Smash.

Renewed push to GET WINSTON HOME!

As yet, Winston still hasn’t been returned and I am just doing this blog to remind people that Winston is still missing and there is a reward for his return.

If anyone out there knows anything about Winston, please please please do the right thing and provide the information to Winston’s Owners, who would dearly love to have him home with them.

New Years Eve 2013

New Years was certainly interesting. Akela Sarah took me (Wilbur) to the cricket game on at Adelaide Oval. We certainly had a great time and the Adelaide Strikers (our home team) won the game, which certainly made the night.

We also got to see several lots of fireworks (all legitimate ones!) as Adelaide Oval was right next to Elder Park in Adelaide. They have a family friendly, non alcoholic event every year. There were fireworks at 9pm (which we watched from the Adelaide Oval, which is right across the river) and then on the way home, we saw the fireworks from Semaphore – which is a Northern seaside suburb of Adelaide.

It was certainly an enjoyable New Years Eve. We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a great new year.

Centenary of Cub Scouting – Activity for Cubs

In 1916, it will be 100 years since the Cub Scout Section was introduced into Scouting. For those interested, the National Youth Council are doing some work on how to best celebrate this milestone. Please read the message below and have a look at the link and see what you can come up with

Cub leaders/ parents!
The Frankston Patrol of the National Youth Council are doing some work at the moment on how to celebrate the Centenary of Cub Scouting in 1916 (100 years since the release of the 'Wolf Cub's Handbook'). We've put together a short (and hopefully fun!) worksheet that we'd love to get out to as many Cubs as possible. Unfortunately, we need responses back by the 10th of February - yes, we know most of that period is over the summer break . We don't mind whether Cubs do them with the rest of their Pack or at home, or wherever else you can think of, but we would love to get as many responses as possible. Adelaide Test Match

Today was the 5^th day of the Test Match (a 5 day cricket game) at Adelaide Oval. Akela and I have been every day of the game. Akela is a HUGE cricket fan and loves watching the game. So, I was often there watching or sleeping in her bag.

 The game was between Australia and England, one of five in a series. The five game series being called The Ashes. The Ashes is the notional prize in a Test cricket series played between England and Australia. The Ashes are regarded as being held by the team that won the last Test series between those sides or, if that series was drawn, by the team that last won such a series. They were un officially started in 1882, when Australia beat England on English soil. The British vowed to “regain the ashes”, referring to the lost of the game to ‘the convicts’.

One of the entertaining aspects of the games between Australia and England is the English Barmy Army. Essentially, they are the English supporter fan base, and had their beginnings in 1994/95. Today, Akela took me over to meet their leader (of sorts) Jimmy.. He is often seen out the front of the group leading the singing and getting them fired up.

 

Overall, it wasn’t a bad way to spend 5 days and Akela certainly enjoyed herself (which is the main thing really)
