National Tree PLanting Day with Friends of Pledger Wetlands

Today was national Tree Planting Day, so Akela arranged for the Cubs to do a joint activity with the Friends of Pledger Wetlands to join in their tree planting activity. Friends of Pledger Wetlands do a environmental activity on the last Sunday of each month (except December) and this was the second activity we had done with them this year. This activity, not only were Mawson Lakes Cub Pack represented, but also the Mawson Lakes Girl Guides, and the tree planting of 350 trees got planted quicker than the time allowed.

 The rain held off on the day, but we are now just hoping for rain in the days that follow so that the trees have a chance to really get a decent start.

The Cubs who attended seem to have a great time, so we are hoping to be able to take part in more activities with Friends of Pledger Wetlands.

A day exploring

Today was another wet and windy day at Victor Harbor. We still managed to get out for a little while during the day though.

After lunch and some driving round (certainly not walking in this weather) it was time to head home. While we were only gone a few days, it was just good to be able to get away for a few days.  We even found a really cool looking toilet in one of the national parks we visited! Photos below

 

Trip to Victor Day One

Today, Akela and I were awoken early, to catch the sight of an early morning sunrise at Victor Harbor. The last few days, the weather has been really bad and we haven’t seen much sun (it’s called winter and the last few weeks we have had some really wet weather).  Although we have only been in Victor since the late Monday.

Once we had gotten organized, had breakfast, and showered, we eventually went out and had a bit of a drive around. We spent some time in Goolwa, and had lunch at a small cafe near the bridge to Hidmarsh Island. A visit to the library and the borrowing of books for Akela’s nephew and niece was a wise move given the weather went down hill a bit in the late afternoon and we needed something to occupy them with. Once in bed, it was good to have a book to read and listen to the rain on the roof

 

Cub Campfire Cooking – June 2015

During the month of June 2015, Mawson Lakes Cub Pack did several nights on campfire cooking.

The first night of cooking, we cooked sausages and vegetables in foil containers. Unfortunately, Akela didn’t get any photos of that night’s cooking efforts (maybe next time!)

On the second night of cooking (which was also last week of term), the pack made Mc Muffins and Soup over the campfire.

The Cubs really enjoyed the Mc Muffins and also glad the soup turned out (those who had the soup seemed to enjoy it a lot). The recipe for this is below. It came from http://scoutermom.com/325/camp-mcmuffins-recipe/

Camp McMuffins

Equipment:
Grill
Bowl
Skillet
Marshmallow forks (optional)
Foil

Ingredients
4 English muffins
6 slices ham, cubed
4 eggs
4 slices American cheese
Butter

Prepare your fire.

Split the English muffins and butter both sides. Toast over fire on the grill or on marshmallow forks. Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl. Put the ham in a hot greased skillet and add the eggs. Scramble the eggs and ham until the eggs are set.

Put 1/4 of mixture on to half of an English muffin. Top with 1 slice of cheese. Put the other half of the English muffin on top. Wrap in aluminium foil. The sandwiches will stay warm for about 15 minutes.

Serves 4

Mulching with Friends of Pledger Wetlands

Today, the Cubs and Akela joined Friends of Pledger Wetlands to do some Mulching in the lead up to the planting season. It was also to help ensure that the plants that have recently been planted have a good chance of ensuring the rain that will occur in the coming months will have the cover to keep the water where it is needed.

The Cubs really enjoyed the activity and even the brother and father who joined us for the activity got involved and help ensure the piles of mulch went down quickly.

Overall, a good day and we are looking forward to working with Friends of Pledger Wetlands again soon.

Article for SA Scout- Mawson Lakes Zulu Pack’s Art Day Out

Today, Mawson Lakes Cub Pack went into the SA Art Gallery to work on their Art and Design badges. This was done to take in the month’s activities through the Art Gallery’s START program.

Some of you may be asking what the START program is.

On the first Sunday of the month, the Art Gallery of South Australia runs free activities for children aged 5 to 10 years of age. It is called the START program and offers an introduction to visual art for children (and their families).

The START program is free and includes art activities, tours, live performance and entertainment. Each month, the theme changes to suit current exhibitions within the Art Gallery. START is recommended for children aged 5-10 years and adult supervision is required.

What this means for Mawson Lakes Cubs, is it becomes a relatively inexpensive day out. Simply for the cost of the train fare into town, and the Cubs bringing their own packed lunches, we have a great day out and get some badge work done.

The theme of the START program for May was "Every Picture Tells a Story" and some of the activities that we did included:

Children’s Tours: Where we took a guided tour of the Trent Parke: The Black Rose exhibition and learnt how he created a forest from his dreams.

Cloud Creations: Where the Cubs had a chance to traced the pictures they saw  in the clouds in a layered drawing and finish in a frame.

Every Picture Tells a Story: The Cubs explored the possibilities of making your own visual story by recording a memory or dream playing with a variety of images

GooRoo Animation Screening: Saw the awesome animation films created by school holiday workshop participants at the Art Gallery.

Mr Oopy Children’s show: We also enjoyed the energy interactive performance by the children’s entertainer extraordinaire Mr Oopy.

The theme of this particular START program saw at least 2 of the cubs get enthused about photography as both an art form and as a hobby. Trent Parke’s work is certainly very interesting and was definitely a great way for the cubs to view how something that can be viewed as an everyday activity can be both an art form and a method of storytelling. That we were able to get the trip to count towards different parts of the Art and Design badge at the same time was also a bonus.

Attending a START day at the Art gallery has become a un planned bi-annual event for Mawson Lakes Cub Pack. The themes for the days are generally listed 3 months in advance on the Art Gallery website (although they are ALWAYS on the 1^st Sunday of the month). But they are certainly a great way to get Cubs (and Joeys) out and about, doing something they may not necessarily do.
