National Tree Day with Friends of Dry Creek

Today, several Cubs and leaders joined with the Friends of Dry Creek to do some tree Planting.

There were 2000 trees to plant and around 200 people (community) turned up. There were several Scout Groups, besides Golden Grove Cubs, as well as a school group and general community members in attendance.

Due to the number of people, the trees were planted quickly and were done within an hour, instead of the advertised 2 hours.

Golden Grove Cubs last attended a tree planting with Friends of Dry Creek back in 2019, and hope we will be able to link  in with them again in the future.

Cub Personal Development Course

Today, we had two Cubs from Golden Grove Scout Group attend the Personal Development Course at Magill Scout Hall.

The Personal Development Course is a full day activity, which is apart of the award scheme.

The Cub Scout Personal Development Course is to assist Cubs in their role as a Patrol Leader or Assistant Patrol Leader and by attending the course will gain confidence, strengthen their own abilities, and be prepared to take on responsibility in the Unit.

Not every youth member will attend a course, but for those going for their Peak Award from Cub Section to Rover Section, there is a need to attend one. It is not a requirement for the Joey Section Peak Award, but for all the other section Peak Awards, it is.

During the day, the youth members cover problem solving, team work, communication, and discussing what they think makes a good leader.

Overall, it was a great day, and each cub who attended will have taken something away from the day.

Comedy Capers Matinee

This afternoon, the Cub and Joey sections attended the matinee of Comedy Capers Gang Show at the Shedley Theatre. We were also joined by several parents for the show.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the show and it was good for the youth members to see our Scout Section leaders on the stage preforming. We are sure that we will be back to see the show again next year.

Cobbler Creek Hike - Jamboree Of The Trail

Today, the Cubs, 2 leaders and 1 parent did a 4-hour hike within Cobber Creek. The Cubs hiked a total of 9km. The time included several breaks. When we looked at the hike, it said it could be done in 3 ½ to 4 hours.

The Cub Unit has been looking at providing a variety of length of times and distance. This was one that fitted both and we are hoping that the youth members are enjoying the variety.

Overall, it was a great day, and we think we have re-created a Cub Photo from a previous walk. Or at least a very close re-creation of the photo.

ANZAC Day 2023

It was an early start to the day. Scouting Human and I were heading into the AZAC Day march in Adelaide, as the Cub and Joey section had offered the Joeys and Cubs the chance to join us as one of their activities for “Their Service, Our Heritage” badge requirements.

We were joined by a couple of families, which was good to see. We are aware that with ANZAC Day being in the School Holidays can make it hard if people are away. The leadership base does encourage them to attend ANZAC events that are local to where they are staying if they are able to do so.

ANZAC Eve

This evening, Scouting Human and I went to the evening service, on Anderson Walk, Smithfield. The City of Playford do an evening service, at the start of the Overnight Vigil, which is made up of the local youth groups, such as Guides (Mainly from Munno Para Guides), Scouts (Drawn from across Ridley District), CFS and St John Cadets.

We were joined by a Cub and their Joey Sibling (with their mum) for the service, as they would be unable to attend a dawn service in the morning.  The youth members who attended were extremely well behaved. It was a short service, which also suited the younger ages and certainly helped the youth members reflect upon the meaning of ANZAC Day.
