South Australia Cub Leadership and Personal Development Course - Hope Valley Scout Hall

 Today, 5 Cubs from Golden Grove attended the Cub Leadership Course / Personal Development Course at Hope Valley Scout Hall. It was a full day – 9 to 4pm. But the Cubs who attended will have learnt a lot and the activities looked awesome, as they covered teamwork and leadership with each one. 

 

We are sure each one who attended gained something and will be able to put it to use within the Cub Section during activities in the future. 

Sunday at Revolution

Today was a bit of a slower start. The cubs and joeys were up a bit later than yesterday (I wonder if it was because they were tired???). There were also only 3 activities bases to be done this morning, and while it was busy and the activities enjoyed by all, there was less background noise at the activity bases.

All too soon, we were heading to the Closing Ceremony and then back to the campsites for lunch. Once lunch was finished, everyone got into packing up gear and pulling down the tents. Once done, it was time to pack the cars and head home. We are sure there were many tired Joeys and Cubs in cars heading home and that a number would have fallen asleep on the way.

For the Cubs, the next South Australian Cuboree will be in 2017, and for the Joeys, their next state camp will be in 2016. I am sure the next generation of Cubs and Joeys will enjoy their major event as much as the current group who attended this weekend did.

Saturday at Revolution

Today, many of the youth members were up bright and early. Nothing really unusual about this, as it was the 1^st day of camp. Thankfully, our cubs were not up as early as some of other sub camps. In one case, they reported having cubs at 4am.

After breakfast, everyone headed over to the main arena for the opening before heading to the start of the activities. The opening was short, but entertaining as it should be. The activities proved to be great. It was full on as we had 3 hours worth of activities, with a break for morning tea as well – all before lunch! Then after lunch we headed off for another afternoon of activities. I am hoping they sleep well tonight, as we still have tea and evening entertainment to get through yet before we have a chance to get to bed!

The weather has been really good and we are certainly enjoying a lot of sunshine, and also remembering to be sun smart, with hats, sunburn cream and drinking lots of water!

 

 

The Start of Palaver

Today, it was time to get ready for another weekend away with Akela. The reason we are going away is because it is Palaver weekend. This is a weekend where Cub Leaders get together, in a relaxed friendly environment to network, make friends and to exchange ideas.

We arrived early as we had gotten a lift up to Woodhouse (where we were staying in the Rymill Conference Centre) and were lucky enough to have our choice of rooms. Once we set up, it wasn’t long before other leaders started to arrive and name tags were donned, so people could get to know which sixes they were in for the weekend. These small groups were so that people could attend activity sessions together.

The evening was relaxed, with some getting to know you mixing activities, a lot of laughter and fun was had. Certainly was enjoyable seeing people mix and getting to know each other in a great atmosphere!

After some great supper (which included fairy bread!) people slowly started making their way to bed. But not before more laughter, and socializing (I think there is going to be a lot of that happening this weekend!)

Ridley District Cub Section Roller Skating

Today, the cub section of Ridley District went Roller Shaking at Gawler Sports and Recreation Centre. It was a lot of fun. There are some very good skaters around the district, both adults and youth members alike. But there were also just as many who were trying skating for the very 1^st time.

Overall, it was a great activity and everyone seemed to be keen to do it again. I think there are a few cubs who will be practising the activity a bit more so they get better at it.

South Australian Branch Cub Hike

Today, I went out with the Mawson lakes Cub Pack on a hike around Adelaide. It was a coolish day, but this was a bonus as it meant we didn’t get hot and we finished just in time before it started to rain! That was a total bonus.

We traveled into the city by train, and traveled on the tram and came home by the bus. So we certainly got to experience all types of transport while we were out and about!

It was a long hike and a lot of questions, which were spread out all over the city. It was certainly a fun day! We did really well with the questions and Akela was impressed – she didn’t think we would get as many of them as we did! So that was a bonus.

While out, we met the following Cub Packs while doing the walk as well:

·         Hillcrest Cub Pack

·         Aldinga Bay Cub Pack

·         Eden Hills Cub Pack (x 2 – they had split into three groups and we met two groups)

·         A pack from Sturt District (who we didn’t get the name of the pack from)

Akela even shouted the cubs an ice cream each and it was certainly appreciated by the Cubs.

Some of the questions that were asked were quite interesting and certainly got the cubs looking for information. I didn’t answer many really. It could be said I was simply along for the ride. But one thing Akela should get me is my own little pouch type bag so I can travel a bit easier than what I did for the hike. I think it would make it easier all round

Cub Hike - Para Wirra Recreational Park

Today, the Cubs went for a hike at Para Wirra Recreational Park. It was a good day to go for a walk and was certainly an enjoyable day for all who attended. Akela even got to take some video footage of two Emus walking up the path towards us. It was pretty awesome!

Palaver - Saturday Night 27th August 2011

Saturday dawned bright and early. The rooms were quite comfortable and both Akela and I were quite warm. Breakfast was plentiful and warming. Akela just had cereal. But I did check out the cooked breakfast enjoyed by those who had it.


Our first session of the day was about Ceremonies. It is very clear that these are an important part of Cubing, allowing the pack to come together and celebrate the achievements of others in the pack and being an important part of the opening and closing of pack meetings. We then headed to Morning tea and our second session, which looked at the differences between Australian and American Scouting, especially Cub Scouting. Our final session before lunch was on Cub Cooking, which occurred right before lunch.

Lunch was very filling and there was no way we were going hungry this weekend! Hamburgers and salad was great and very filling. Certainly much appreciated by Wilbur!

After lunch, the next session was out and about around Woodhouse. This was interesting and allowed us much needed fresh air and exercise. There’s no way anyone on Palaver is underfed! It was quite pleasant at Woodhouse. A little cool, but it wasn’t raining, there was plenty of sunshine, creating a nice day to be outside.

Afternoon tea allowed Akela’s six a chance to practice their segment for after tea entertainment. Thanks to one of their day participants, the group leant a simple folk dance and Akela is now wishing that she had gotten someone to record it as a video on her camera as a record. All the skits were entertaining and the evening was certainly a long night of a lot of laughter and enjoyment by all. It was late before Wilbur made it to bed, but it was certainly a enjoyable night
