Day two Shakedown -

Well, today was certainly a better day. While cool when we got up and cloudy, there certainly wasn’t a repeat of the Friday night welcoming weather!

Today, the scouts got the camp site sorted (after last night’s hurry, the was a bit of fine tuning to do understandably). It also provided a chance for the leaders to sort the patrols, for the patrols to do some bonding getting to know each other activities and generally start to get to know each other.

Some of the highlights of today’s activities were the Akela activity, where the patrols were given questions about points around woodhouse and they had to find the answers, and of course the famous hair straightener incident in the toilets (I am still not sure why a hair straightener were on camp,– all to do with the disco in the evening apparently! I wonder if it will find a way to Jamboree? Think the leaders are hoping it wont…..)

Oh, and the female who didn’t like the kookaburra  pulling a worm out of the ground and eating it in front of her. She got no sympathy from Akela, who took photos of the bird when she went to find out why there was such a noise being made….Akela thought it might have been over a spider or similar. But sadly not. That poor kookaburra having to put up with the noise.

Also, even though Adelaide Football Club didnt get into the Grand Final (Australian Football League), there was still a great deal of interest in the game and several radios were to be heard around the campsite.....

And we had a goodnight sleep tonight – certainly going to bed drier than Friday night!

Wet set up to Shakedown Camp

This evening, Akela and I arrived at Woodhouse Scout Campsite for shakedown camp. It was certainly a wet start to the weekend. There were strong winds when we arrived, and heaps and heaps of rain as well as several bursts of hail as well.

The tents were certainly put up quickly and gear put in out of the rain. A fire was built and appreciated by all standing around it.

It wasn’t long before the sleeping tents were put up and people started going to bed to get out of the weather.

Scouts in Action Week 20th to 26th August 2012

This week at Cubs, we participated in Scouts in Action Week. This has been running for several years and the theme for this year was International. It was really good. We made Pancakes for the Canadians and Akela has run several international themed games for the night. One of the Cubs who started his scouting in the USA wore his American Cub Uniform and spoke about what it was like to be a American Cub Scout. Overall, I think we had a really good night.

Above is the picture of the badge that everyone who did that week’s program was able to get. Akela organised these for all the Cubs who participated. The Joeys also did it and made Pancakes as well.

I am sure that if it is happening again in 2013, that Mawson Lakes Cubs will be participating again and enjoying the activities that are on offer.

Stow away

Wilbur's stowed away for a holiday. I saw Akela's husband packing his bags for a week. I am not sure where we're heading, but I am sure I'll have fun while Akela is at home for the week.

Carisbrooke District Cub Cook Off 2012

Today, I went with the Cubs to Carisbrooke District Cook Off. It was a great day, and it didn’t rain once, despite it being cloudy and cool.

Lucky also that we were cooking on a campfire as well. This also ensured that we were warm and a few people came to stand by the fire as well.

Tomorrow, Wilbur will be heading to District Cub Cook Off with Akela. I hope the Cubs win. Either way, I am sure we will have a great time and have a good day. The Cubs will also be finishing off their L2 Cooking badges as well. That’s called BONUS!!!

South Australian Branch Cub Hike

Today, I went out with the Mawson lakes Cub Pack on a hike around Adelaide. It was a coolish day, but this was a bonus as it meant we didn’t get hot and we finished just in time before it started to rain! That was a total bonus.

We traveled into the city by train, and traveled on the tram and came home by the bus. So we certainly got to experience all types of transport while we were out and about!

It was a long hike and a lot of questions, which were spread out all over the city. It was certainly a fun day! We did really well with the questions and Akela was impressed – she didn’t think we would get as many of them as we did! So that was a bonus.

While out, we met the following Cub Packs while doing the walk as well:

·         Hillcrest Cub Pack

·         Aldinga Bay Cub Pack

·         Eden Hills Cub Pack (x 2 – they had split into three groups and we met two groups)

·         A pack from Sturt District (who we didn’t get the name of the pack from)

Akela even shouted the cubs an ice cream each and it was certainly appreciated by the Cubs.

Some of the questions that were asked were quite interesting and certainly got the cubs looking for information. I didn’t answer many really. It could be said I was simply along for the ride. But one thing Akela should get me is my own little pouch type bag so I can travel a bit easier than what I did for the hike. I think it would make it easier all round
