Come and Try Canoeing

Today, we had several cubs attend a Come and Try Paddling activity. Ridley District were offered several sessions over the course of the day, but not all the sessions were filled. So, the sessions were opened up to other groups. So, we managed to get some cubs slotted into one of the sessions. They certainly had a great time and it was certainly a enjoyable day.

Fishing Night at Largs Pier

This evening, we went fishing at Largs Bay Jetty. It was slightly cooler (and windier) than our fishing night back in March, but just as enjoyable for those who attended.

The highlight of this evening’s activity was the catch (and release back) of the Guitar Shark, that was caught in the crab net, eating a crab. It caused much excitement.

Overall, it was another good night out of the hall, providing a variety of activities the them members of the Cub Unit.

Mawson Lakes Urban lake Walk

After the Open Day Birthday Celebrations, it had been decided to do an evening walk for Cubs on the Wednesday. It was relatively easy preparation and a chance to get out of the hall. Which is always a good thing!

It was a short(er) walk this evening, but it was still good chance to add to the Km/walkabout badge totals. It all adds up and several of the Cubs are keen to boost their totals.

Overall, it was a great night and good walk. All who attended enjoyed it.

Open Day - Golden Grove Scout Group 40th Birthday Celebratons

Today, we had an open day for Golden Grove Scout Group. Essentially, it was the group’s 40th Birthday party and we invited a lot of people to come and celebrate the day with us.

It had been several months in the planning, and a bit of work went into the day, who was going to have a spot to talk, which VIPs were going to be invited etc.

There was even a Cub Section Peak Award (Gray Wolf) presentation on the day, and a time capsule buried, to be brought up in 20 years’ time (when the group turns 60).

Golden Grove Scout Group started back in 1983, and came about because a group of parents in Surry Downs were looking at joining a group. They discovered that both local groups of Tea Tree Gully and Ridgehaven Scout Groups were full and had waiting lists. So, they decided to start a new one!

When it came to naming the group, they were in discussions as a parent committee on what to call the group. As this was happening, the state government announced that they were allowing Delfin to develop the area known as Golden Grove. Hence, they decided that they would call the new Scout Group Golden Grove, and hence the group was started. As a result, it just pre dates the suburb.

Overall, today was a great day, and it was well attended by both current and past members. We had the locals MPs, Mayor and the Chief Commissioner of Scouts SA also in attendance.

Scout Shouts Show

Today, a few of us (a couple of youth members, as well as Mowgli and Raksha) went to see afternoon session of Scout Shouts at the Golden Grove Theatre.

It was pleasing to see that one of the Golden Grove Venturers was on stage again and reminding the Cubs that he was once their age.

Those who attended enjoyed the show.

Adelaide Foothills District - Cub Pinewood Derby

Today, after a few weeks of planning and making, the Cubs got a chance to test their Cub Cars out at Magill Scout Hall, at the District Pinewood Derby. Several of our Cubs made it through quite a few of the heats.

While Golden Grove did not have the overall winner on the day, it was a great day and the Cubs all enjoyed it, along with making their cars. Here is hoping the district will do it again next year.

Cub Personal Development Course

Today, there were several Cubs who attended the Personal Development Course held at Flagstaff Hill Scout Hall.

It was a long day, but also a great day of learning for those who attended. Highlights included watching Leaders clear a magpie out of the hall. We are sure this wasn’t on the list of things leaders do when they signed up!

Saturday, August 26, 2023

Today, several cubs working on stage 2 and 3 Bushcarft and Camping, gathered at the hall to do some campfire cooking.

The Cubs built the fire, got it burning and cooked sausages with veg in the hot coals. They started baked apples but not all were cooked prior to leaving the hall.

It provided the leaders with a chance to trial a way to provide a chance to do some of the hands-on aspects of the program that we cannot always cover during a regular cub meeting time-slot.

Under the previous award scheme (badge work

) program, Golden Grove Cub Section had ways of doing sleep overs to help do aspects of the different Boomerang Levels that were not always able to be done during a regular meeting. Cubs generally attended the bronze, silver, or gold level sleepovers, subject to which level they were at.

However, as the Award scheme has changed, it has meant that some aspects of the program delivery have also changed.

As a part of the Plan > Do > Review process, Saturday’s activity was a learning experience for all, especially the leaders. It will allow us to look at different ways to provide opportunities for the award scheme to be offered to the members of Golden Grove Cub Section.

Overall, it provided a valuable learning opportunity to all who attended the afternoon, even the adults who attended.
